Parties must get behind Way Forward on General Surgery in NI – Bradshaw

Alliance Health Spokesperson Paula Bradshaw has welcome the outcome of the Review of General Surgery in Northern Ireland, chaired by Prof Mark A. Taylor, saying that the way forward proposed must now be supported by all parties.

The South Belfast MLA said: “This Review provides an excellent example of exactly the type of work in terms of both reform and improvement which we need to deliver a truly universal and responsive healthcare system.

The Review provides a clear picture of the current situation – the so-called ‘burning platform’ – and the means of setting standards, meeting workforce challenges and delivering appropriate pathways and infrastructure.

What we can see here is a demonstration of the severe difficulties within the system, particularly around workforce planning, but also of the significant opportunities for general surgery and the healthcare system as a whole presented by the Bengoa reforms and of the action needed to make those opportunities a reality.”
