Mr Long had been critical in the run up to the meeting on Friday morning, with the group only coming together, despite being established 95 days ago, and amidst the growing number of concerns regarding safety, cleanliness and the number of vacant buildings.

He said: “It was great to see this group finally get up and running, with a real determination to tackle the current state of Belfast City Centre.  We can and must do better to ensure Belfast remains a place people want to live, work and visit.

“With plans initially to meet again months down the line, I’m delighted that all involved accepted the move to monthly meetings, despite my preference being fortnightly. There is a lot to do and this will ensure Council remains committed to tackling the high urgency many of these issues present.

“Today’s meeting agreed that the first priority will be helping the most vulnerable within our City.  With the growing cost of living crisis and its devastating impact, action is needed now to ensure no one is left alone.  

“As city leaders we have to do all we can to provide additional care and support and I, along with my Alliance colleagues will continue to ensure this group works to its full potential.”
