The new legislation recognises the diversity of families and brings the benefit to a wider scope of people previously excluded from assistance.
The changes also include the opportunity for parents with dependent children whose partner died on or after 30 August 2018 to apply for backdated payments.
A special 12-month application window for parents with dependent children whose cohabiting partner died before 9 February 2023 will also open from that date.
The bereavement benefit and amount they are entitled to will depend on when they lost their partner.
Kellie Armstrong said: “It has taken far too long to recognise parents whose cohabiting partner has died. It is right that the same government support should be available to parents of dependent children when their spouse, civil or cohabiting partner has died.
“Anyone who needs help with their application can contact my office or any Alliance Party office for assistance.”
